Bogdan Bogdanov
 

Bogdan Bogdanov is the author of over 200 books, articles and translations in the field of university education, Ancient Greek literature, culture, philosophy, and human relations.

Bogdan Bogdanov is Professor of Ancient Greek Literature at the University of Sofia.

He has contributed to the modernization of Bulgarian education and academic environment, and to the development of civil society and democracy in Bulgaria. As a manager and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of New Bulgarian University he works for the implementation of the academic profile, the institutional philosophy and the mission of the University. He manages the University’s financial policy and encourages the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the academic community.

 
 

1940
• Bogdan Bogdanov was born in Sofia on 2 November 1940.

1963
• Graduates from the Classical Philology Department of the University of Sofia.
• Begins to teach classical languages, ancient and West European literature at the University of Veliko Tarnovo (until 1969).

1968
• Translates Theophrastus’ Characters from the Ancient Greek.

1969
• Translates Plutarch’s Selected Lives from the Ancient Greek.
• Appointed Assistant Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Sofia.

1971
• His first book, From Homer to Euripides, comes out.

1975
• Translates Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe and Pseudo-Callisthenes’ The Life of Alexander of Macedon from the Ancient Greek.

1976
• Acquires Doctoral degree.
• His book Homer’s Epic is published.

1978
• Specialization at the University of Athens.

1979
• The Literature of Hellenism is published.
• He starts working on the four-volume edition of Plato’s Dialogues (until 1990/B.Bogdanov et al.)

1980
• Member of the Editorial Board of the “World Historical Heritage” series of Nauka i Izkustvo Publishing House.

1981
• Initiates and organizes the “Hermes” ancient literature series with Narodna Kultura Publishing House, where until 1995 a total of 25 works translated from the Ancient Greek and Latin were published.

1983
• Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Sofia (until 1989).

1984
• Specialization at the Amsterdam University.

1985
• Acquires the Doctor of Philological Sciences degree.
• His book Myth and Literature is published.

1986
• His theoretical work The Novel: Ancient and Modern comes out.
• Finishes the translation of Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations.

1987
• Vice Dean of the Faculty of Ancient and Modern Philologies at the University of Sofia (until 1989).

1988
• Works on the fist edition of Ancient Literature. An Encyclopedic Guide.

1989
• Appointed Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Sofia.
• Head of the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Sofia (until 1991).
• His History of Ancient Greek Culture comes out.

1990
• Founder and chairman of the Society for New Bulgarian University. The aim of the Society is to study, develop and implement new educational approaches and programs on the basis on which a new, alternative educational institution should be founded, in line with the democratic changes in Bulgaria after 1989.
• Co-founder of the Open Society Fund and Chairman of its Managing Board (until 1997). Works on the following projects: development of a network of Open Society clubs across the country; foundation of Soros Center for the Arts; launch of Open Education Center; project for the development of an information system covering St. Cyril and Methodius National Library, the University of Sofia Library, the University of Plovdiv Library, the P.R.Slaveikov National Library in Varna, and other regional libraries; opening of National Test Center. Manager of initiatives related to the integration of ethnic minorities, human rights, availability of full Internet access at academic institutions, provision of scholarships for Bulgarian students, promotion of the Bulgarian history, language and culture.

1991
• Founds New Bulgarian University as successor to the Society for New Bulgarian University (decision of the Seventh Grand National Assembly of 18 September 1991).
• Rector (until 1995) and President of New Bulgarian University.
• Appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Greece (until 1993). In this capacity, he contributes to the overcoming of the mutual mistrust between Bulgaria and Greece – a leftover from the years of the Cold War, and to the promotion of Bulgaria’s international image as a guarantor of peace and stability on the Balkans. Elected honorary member of the “Otets Paisii” Bulgarian-Greek Society for special merit.
• His Ancient Greek Literature is published.

1992
• Orpheus and the Ancient Mythology on the Balkans comes out.

1993
• Awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Phoenix of Greece for his service as ambassador.

1995
• Chairman of the Board of Trustees of New Bulgarian University.
• Publication of The Two Welfares.

1996
• Second edition of Homer’s Epic.
• Second edition of Ancient Literature. An Encyclopedic Guide.

1997
• Member of the Council for National Development with the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
• Chairman of the Balkan Association of Semiotic Societies.
• Second edition of The Literature of Hellenism.

1998
• Second edition of Myth and Literature.
• Change in Life and Text comes out.
• Winner of the award of “Citizen” Association for politics and social sciences for Change in Life and Text and for his many years of work for the development of open civil society in Bulgaria.

1999
• Member of the International Council on European Integration with the University of Bonn.
• Member of the selection committee for the International Theatre Festival in Varna.
• Member of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Semiotic Studies.

2000
• Member of the jury for the national “Paisii Hilendarski” Award.
• Founder of Foundation for New Bulgarian University aimed at developing and strengthening the values of the civil society and education and science in Bulgaria for the promotion of a new model of higher education.

2001
• Europe: Understood and Made is published.

2002
• Winner of the highest national award “Hristo G. Danov” in the humanities category for his book Europe: Understood and Made.
• Founder, together with Raina Kabaivanska, of “Raina Kabaivanska” Fund for the support of gifted parentless children.

2003
• Member of the jury for the “Panitsa” Award for Journalism with “Free and Democratic Bulgaria” Foundation.

2004
• Member of the Initiative Committee responsible for the Education Module of the Information Market for the European Union with the Ministry of European Integration.

2005
• Publication, at the end of October, of his book Separate and together dedicated to creativity in science, cultural relations, human thoughts and desires.

2006
• The university: a special world of freedom is published.
• Win The Award for Eurointegration and Transperancy Europe: Pass It ON

2007
• The Reader Culture, society, literature. Texts on cultural anthropology of antiquity has just been published
• Publishes "The Phaedrus" by Plato in the “Ancient philosophy” series

2008
